It’s only just dawning on me how much I'm getting into bits of dead stick. Just refer to the previous doodling-with-ink post or the indoor tree thing. Now, I’m not entirely sure how the Mr was convinced to drill a whopping great HOLE IN THE WALL at the end of the hall, but he was. So we have permanent accommodation for a flock of birdies – at least until they fall off their perches.

The birds were crafted in a flurry of inspiration, after spotting the beautiful bird mobile by Spool Sewing. The pattern has been blogged about endlessly – probably because it is a fab easy-peasy freebie. However, to achieve the mobile hanging/balancing act/physics milarkey, you require either some impressive Mission Impossible style manoeuvres or an additional ten pairs of extremely patient hands. Which is probably why I got to like my stick so much.

Edit: Craft Schmaft so knows how to do birds on a wire and obviously gets the physics thing. Check out her sweet owl mobile. She also likes sticks.

beautiful!! and they won't poo on your head - so extra added bonus points!
Your birds are gorgeous. I just wanted to drop by and say thank you for the gorgeous cards I received in Cass's swap.
I made one bird last year as a test-run then got distracted by other projects, having a baby etc. Your beautiful version makes me want to try again. And I LOVE that you've drilled a hole into the wall for it!! Installation art.
The title of your post did not prepare me for the loveliness to be found at Chez Myrtle and Eunice today!! Love those birdies in their beautiful Japanese plumage. The stck is the perfect resting place for them.
I love your take on these birdies!
They look fantastic!
Wonderful! I love that they are so bright...
They make your dead stick come alive! What a beautiful collection. I love them
I think your birds are spectacular. So, uh, how are they stuck on the stick, anyway?
Now that is cool wall art!
Yeah - I sort of forgot the 'technical' stuff. The birds are attached with a highly scientific cotton loop through the birdy bottom and then around the stick a few times, followed by a dot of super glue. To be honest, you still need some minor sort of Mission Impossible manoeuvres while the glue dries...
This is just so, so beautiful, I adore it. You really are so clever.
I started making these birds too. I want to put them on a stick and hang in our bathroom over the tub. I had put the project aside but you have inspired me to finish it up.
Oh, my gosh! Just beautiful. Those materials! If you hadn't said they were from a sewing book I would have thought they were painted wood! Amazing. And I also love, love, ADORE your stick drawings. Isn't it the best thing when we discover our hidden talents? Love your blog a lot! Wendy xxx
Absolutely exquisite.
How do you find the time to do all these things ! ...she whined , drinking another coffee and gawping at the screen .
I love them ! They each have their own character too ...the blue one looks quite Eeyore-ish.
I'm totally hooked on branch mobiles. Lovely birdies!
looks great and I know how much effort the balancing thing costs..making a mobile is not easy but mostly the result is worth it..
Those are so cute!
And, sticks are always handy to have around. They make the best toys.

Hi Tania, received your lovely handmade cards from the Snailblazer swap yesterday - I absolutely adore them, thanks. Those birds are to die for as well!

I am hilariously, for the past 2 days - and BEFORE seeing this post, making my own little birdies from this pattern. It's so easy and fab I couldn't resist!
Aren't they great? I'm making some from velvet & silk as gifts - good times :)

The birds are gorgeous and my, what lovely dead sticks you have! Who would have thought we could be so obsessed by such a thing? Nice work on drilling a hole in the wall!
I have to defend my sticks from my little boy who belives ALL sticks are HIS sticks.
Thanks so much for the kind words and link to the owl mobile.
Love your little birdies! I've been thinking about making a more simple mobile for Cameron's room, with one birdie on top of another rather than the physics thing...
The permanance of drilling your stick into the wall is great!!! Because we're renting at the mo, drilling is out for us.
Have always loved a good dead stick tho. With great sadness I threw away my twisted willow sticks from Easter just recently. No space to store them... :((

So pretty! I've been meaning to make some for ages but haven't yet managed to get around to it. Looks as though my sewing machine and I might have to make a date very soon .... I feel inspired by these :-)
These are beautiful! I NEVER sew but you have inspired me :-)
