Bear with me while I have a Sooky Mummy Moment? It’s been a high pressure week of tying things up – amongst it: Christmas card making, school concerts and parties, packing up, festive plotting and conniving, working through volumes of proud kid achievement – until finally it’s Friday and it’s time to breathe in cruisy starts to summer holiday mornings.
Before I do, this afternoon I walked into another Hall of Mirrors, took a good hard look at myself and realised afresh, I am One Wimpy Mama. I am not the mother of a Grade Six kid who is about to spread their wings and try a new adventure. But standing in the final school assembly today, bidding farewell to the ‘big’ kids and some already missed teachers, there were sooky tears, a lump in my throat and the requirement for a seriously concerted effort to hold on to the dignity. I couldn’t believe how those kids had grown. How they stood with their feet on the ground. They looked comfy in their skins. They sang with their arms raised to the stars and you could tell they’d remember this for a while – longer even. So I had a big grin disguising that wobbly lower lip and just like that, the school year is over and summer really has begun.

I had a lip-wobbly moment like that this morning at the toddler-music Christmas party, when the 5-year olds starting school next year took a bow. Had to get a grip on the heartstrings.
Have a lovely holiday!x
awwww ♥
big hug from one mom who has been there as well~
Toughen up, Tania! That's what I'd say if I were there. :P Then I'd give you a big hug too. Yours are still little, Plenty of munchkin moments to come yet. X
I'm a sooky Mama too... and we haven't even reached turning three years old yet!!!
I saw my wee boy in a pair of 'shorts' that were formerly three quarter pants and almost burst into tears... sometime I just want to strap a brick to the top of his head to stop him growing.
Awwww that's one gorgeous post! No matter how old and how big they get when you least expect it, these moments still happen ... you're a sweetheart ;)
*sniffle!*
I hope that day never comes...! ;)
awww - I do know what you mean. My eldest started highschool this year. I remember feeling rather fragile at the primary graduation ceremony!
We used to tease my dad about his "dad moments" when we were kids, and I don't do that anymore.
It was Caleb's last day at preschool yesterday, and I have been sooking about it all week. First day of school will be a tough one.
I cry at every assembly, I cried at the christmas parade, I cry whenever the kids at school sing a song together, particularly the national anthem! - and I am not that patriotic. You can call me Sooky-la-la! The love gets me every time.
It is special & sad at the same time, seeing our babies grow up & move on to the next stage of their lives. My oldest is moving on to grade 3 next year & while it is exciting we were all so sad to be finishing such a fabulous year with a great teacher & great friends...but now for the holidays - enjoy!
What a special moment and I tend to be sooky too so I can fully understand!
Now HAPPY HOLIDAYS:)xx
Total sook here, too.
hey I got teary when reading the lyrics to 6 white boomers the other day - so you are in no danger of judgement here! the moments just slide by...
enjoy the hols!
You've introduced me to some new terminology that totally describes me. I am one sooky mommy.
Enjoy the moment ... I saw lots of mums and dads with their little ones on hols to the beach this morning. Lots of new togs and towels and struggles with the shade tents, possibly bought yesterday. Too cute. Have a lovely break.
Another Sooky mum here.
I cried yesterday at the last day of preschool for kids I barely know. I saw one little boy proudly wearing his school uniform for next year and lost it. Not even my kid.
I always cry at the concerts. I can't sing the national anthem along with them because my throat is choked with sobs.
Very pleased to hear that I am in good company.
Jeez, will you listen to us all- what a pack of sooki-la-la's. three cheers for all the sooky mamas!!! we earn every sooky moment, I just look at Busy sometimes and cry at her- in fact i spent the first year of her life pretty much looking at her and crying at how lucky we were to have this baby... sigh... gawd..any children singing anything gets me teary... reminds me I am not as hip and cool as I ( hardly ever) think I am...
hugs and kisses. glad to hear you kept your cool in a moment where I would have been a blubbering mess. xoo .
Children singing are guaranteed to make us sniffle . Watching them grow up and break free makes us sob . Watching them with their own new babies makes us howl .
It's a load of laughs being a Mum.
I FLEE!!! I'm one of those mum's that see the tears starting around me and I'm off...grab the kids and get to the car....Once one start's they all start!!! When it's my turn...I will be the same...I will have the tissues...yep that will be me...sitting up the back..attempting to SUCK IT UP...BUT not this year!!! PHEW x
Oh I get teary and we don't even do school!! Have a lovely summer with your big kid before she spreads those beautiful wings. x
