My Creative Space: McEnroe Gold

Don’t you want to play it again? I remember watching this famous wobbly in real time, in, ahem, 1981. THIRTY YEARS AGO. Cripes. It has always been my favourite McEnroe tantie. Someone close to me may even have been known to quote the man (during a Tania tantie). When the planetary alignment occurred a couple of days ago and there was a ridiculous need to throw myself in to some speedy, Why The Heck Not? making, this is where things ended up...

Entirely prompted by this needlepoint notion found in the fabulous book: Crafting a Meaningful Home,

I tweaked things a little to suit my swift crafting purposes: a hasty stencil, a one-off screenprint (whereby some of the stencil went, um, AWOL),

a speedy embroidering of John McEnroe and a post rationalised AHA! moment with the aida cloth (removing bits to pay homage to (badly strung) racquet strings)...

All up, I’m pretty chuffed. I mean, I’d do everything entirely differently, neatly, carefully, were I to do it again but as far as the dodgy bits go, I really couldn’t give a bad ball toss. Crafty mischief is wonderful for this soul, the Mr is resignedly signed up to yet more wall art and most of all, it’s a fabulous reminder to plant a smile on the dial. Life shouldn’t be so serious. Right?

Crafting Gold Tania.

Are you going to mount it in a chalk outline, with a wayward ball?

Wonderful, the type is perfect and I love those old racquets, they had so much character (a bit like old JM). Not much good for hitting the ball though.
You are an original! Keep it up :-)

Pure and utter gold. And trust you to make something wonderful out of the fabulous McEnroe tantie
I love it, it's like it you don't feel like saying this to the persons face , you just show them the racket!!xo

This is brilliantly wonderful!

That is just wonderful! In my roof space the other day we found a press, similar to a flower press but my Dad said it was used to clamp on wood rackets like that to stop them warping.

I think I laugh every time I read one of your posts. That racket is perfect.

the original in the book is a bit, erm, lame...

yours is awesome!

(US slanging seems appropriate!)

I too remember it the first time round. I was still at primary school!

Inside of your head... it's like the 8th wonder of the world.

Cheers,

Oh I WANT ONE! I'd be chuckling my head off walking past that everyday! Which, come to think of it, given my current state may not be such a wise move. Not sure the pelvic floor muscles could stand it.

Just awesome lady!

silverpebble said...

OK. Sew yourself a mahoosive handbag and stash the racquet inside. Hold it up in traffic jams or unruly queues. I might show it at my children when they're fighting over the damned beanie baby pig again. Genius.

Di said...

Awesome. Major flashbacks here.
Nice to see you hit off the craft year in such good form.

Pure gold! Apart from the obviously funny side, what a perfect thing to have on your wall - I need to be told that every day, especially on seriously grumpy Mum days.

On a simliar, yet different note altogether, we have a fantastic butterfly catcher made for my kids by my clever sister from an old wooden tennis racket just like that one. I love repurposing.

To repeat the refrain, it really is brilliant! You maverick crafter you!
Now, sufficiently inspired, I'm off to work on my own maverick craft that I started yesterday.

That is brilliant!

spectacularfairywren said...

you have captured it perrrfectly. It wouldn;t be nearly so hip if it was on carbon/titanium HEAD alloy racquet with "C'mon!" emblazoned with attiTUDE. I would not be into that.

But i am well into this.

Did anyone else have pat cash on their wall as a teen in love?

Oh man, I love this! You always have the best, most creative ideas! I love the clip of McEnroe. It's always fun to watch athletes having a tizzy!

Brilliant! absolutely love it! Such a clever idea and I love the sentiment.. a true entertainer of our time! My mum had some old wooden racquets at home, I'm not sure what's happened to them but I wish we'd thought to do this!
