Coming Over All Stereotype

Given the living-in-Melbourne thing and the chillier-around-the-edges-weather thing and the poncy-graphic-designer thing, it seems only right, that as from last Friday, I am spending every waking hour swathed in black.

This is my ‘mistake’ Mara. I am more in love with it than anything I have ever made for myself.* In my eyes, there isn’t anything wrong about it, even though it was supposed to be a cardigan. After waiting six forevers for the yarn to arrive, I realised in point six of a nanosecond after it did, that I had fatally (for the cardigan), misordered.

I need not another weighty cardi. Clearly, I do need a weighty Mara – with smooosh factor and subtle graduating tones, snuggliest warmth and fabulous drape.

.........................

* With the possible exception of the matching fluoro-spotted tops my friend Debbie and I made and wore to school casual day in 1983.

EDIT: Tania finally got her Ravelry act together. Shocking, I know. For all Mara knitty details pop by here!

What a stunning mistake. I love a good cardi, but you know shawls knock the socks off them sometimes.
I'm looking forward to a little bit of cooler weather her to wrap up in.
Have a great week.

Oh that is so yummy. It is also super cool that you can look back on anything that you wore in the
80s with pride and happiness lol.

Tres chic, Ms M&E!! VERY Melbourne-poncy-graphic-designer!!!

I've noted that we are designers of a different kind, you and I.... not only by my complete lack of graphic-design finesse, but by the fact that I've been poncing about lately IN RED.

That is a pretty awesome mistake.

(Must ask, though: No bosoms or bums? Why not?)

Ooh, love the glamourous poses, and the big stuff up! Pefect, who needs sleeves, they can get annoying!

Don't your blonde curls look great against that charcoally black.
Another wonderful knit, love the texture in it and the geometric look of the ribbing.

I love the Mara - and your curls against the charcoal. Have to say that I too was erring towards head to toe black yesterday.

It looks beautiful. What gorgeous yarn you used too.

Can you talk for a bit about how it keeps your bosoms warm?

Mara is just perfect for today's grey Melbourne weather. (oh, and l agree with Suse - looks like a great bosom warmer ;))

Is it reeeaaally that cold "down there" already? You southerners seems to be on the hook or the sticks all year round! I think it looks lover-ly.

LOVE!!!!!! I neeeed one toooo.
I live an hour and a half away and we aren't exactly going to bump into each other on the school run, so do you think its ok?? If so, how much yarn did you use?

it's beautiful! the colour is perfectly smooshy. And hasn't it taken a turn for the colder. April came and whoosh, the leaves tumbled and the temperature dropped. Enjoy your lovely shawl.

Oooh - I love it too! I have some tosh sportweight that needs a project, and I'm only in the mood for easy knitting.

OMG knit chic!! Gorgeous.

Nikki! Shhhhhh! Don't say it outloud or you will have your 'Melbourne/Designer/Indie Artiste' membership retracted. And that hurts, they don't use anaesthetic!!!!!!!

Oh, most pulchritudinous. You really need to resurrect your Rav account to show that one off! My friend Foggyknitter made a Mara and it was a very arduous knit, such looong rows. Well done on such a quick finish.

And it's not black, black. Not - suck all the light out of the room and make you look like a black hole with a head stuck on top, black. It's got texture and movement and I'm sure it was worth the fact that you will be eating beans on toast til 2013.

Cheers,
AJ

hmmm, I do love it but note a distinct lack of black worn underneath that 'Mara'...I trust that was for photographic purposes only.

So beautiful!
I hope you can get some warmth out of our U.S. posts through your winter. I know I did from all the Aussie blogs I read it was a gloomy wet winter here but spring is here!

A very elegant garment ! And I can quite understand it becoming this Autumn's First-On-Last-Off piece of clothing .

It looks gorgeous - sometimes grey/black/dark coloured shawl is all one needs for perfect happiness. I keep on planning to get around to knitting something similar, maybe before the next winter starts.

It's beautiful! And looks so deliciously warm too (as I sit here shivering!)

Tammi said...

Oh I so need one too!! It is gorgeous and what a stunning colour.
Love it.

Mel said...

Ugggggghhhhh! I don't know what's more gorgeous - the Mara or the dangly curls! I'm guessing the curls would be easier for moi to achieve ...

Mara is breathtakingly excellent. Oh but to be truly Melbournian surely you need a coffee in your hand as well?

Fer said...

Oh wow, that's just too damn gorgeous! And hey, you live in Melbourne, so black is always the new black.... ;)

Gaby said...

It is so beautiful! And so very 'Melbourne.' I love it!

Andrea said...

Before you get too carried away with describing yourself as all swathed in poncy black:
a- it's gorgeous
b- i see hints of grey under there, and grey is not black!!
c- It's ok to to wear black. It doesn't mean your a poncy designer. I wear black everyday....by accident, because i'm useless at buying colour, not because of any poncy designer highfallutin I wear prada this and that (although that is probably more melbourne architects to be fair). hehe

Wow, that really is the perfect steely grayish black color! And I can just imagine how squooshy and soft it is!
